SaudiNet in Saudi Arabia

In late 1999, Saudi Telecom Company awarded Swedtel the prestigious contract to start up its Internet Service Provider (ISP).

The ISP was on the air after three months and the entire project was successfully completed within one year. Dr. Abdullah Al Musa, Project Manager for Saudi Telecom, says: “The Saudi Internet services market was already marked by fierce competition, with more than 20 active ISPs having a had start of over one year on SaudiNet. Through a rapid start-up process and innovative marketing SaudiNet jumped to a top three position in its first year of operation.”

The first step of the start-up process was to formulate an aggressive, but realistic business plan. The implemented business plan resulted in a nation-wide network operated by a competitive organization, complete with recruited and trained local staff, working according to processes supported with functional IT systems.

"Swedtel’s market
strategy has indeed
been successful."

“We are impressed with the drive and energy with which Swedtel assisted in planning and implementing SaudiNet,” says Dr. Al Musa.

SaudiNet quickly achieved a substantial market share, initially creating a customer base by focussing on the business sector.

“Swedtel’s market strategy has indeed been successful. They adapted well to the Saudi Arabian culture and Saudi way of doing business.” Dr. Al Musa concludes.
